Kindi’s Incredible Journey A Gorilla’s First Year at the Louisville Zoo

Kindi, a western lowland gorilla, captured hearts from the moment she was born at the Louisville Zoo. Her journey began with both joy and sorrow—her mother, Mia Moja, passed away during childbirth in March 2016. This tragic loss left baby Kindi orphaned, but the dedicated zookeepers stepped in, determined to give her the love and care she needed.

In her first year, Kindi was bottle-fed, cuddled, and carried by keepers around the clock, mimicking the closeness a mother gorilla would provide. As she grew stronger, the zoo began preparing her for life with her gorilla family. Kindi was gradually introduced to Kweli, a gentle female gorilla who accepted the little one as her own. This emotional bonding marked a milestone in Kindi’s development.

Kindi’s first year was filled with playful moments, big milestones, and an ever-growing fan base. Visitors watched her learn to climb, interact with others, and develop a strong personality—curious, brave, and full of energy. Her story is not only one of survival but of hope and resilience.

Today, Kindi stands as a symbol of what compassion, teamwork, and commitment can achieve. Her incredible journey reminds us all of the importance of conservation and the deep bonds between humans and animals.
